I love life, and I want to experience as much of it as I possibly can. That passion is what you get when you work with me and The Nathiverse.
It is also why I never managed to pick one thing. Guitar, kitchens, a wedding venue, the gym, a camera — they all stuck.
What I did manage was to take each of them seriously. Grade VIII on the guitar. Qualified as a PT. Twenty years running a venue and five hundred-odd weddings out the door. A kitchen doing a hundred and fifty covers a night. A long list — but not a dabbling list.

25 years · Grade VIIIThe oldest one, and still running under everything else. Twenty-five years of 60s blues rock and Mississippi fingerstyle, taken to Grade VIII, and far enough to end up on stage with Vin Garbutt and Albert Lee. It leaks into the day job too — I cut to rhythm, because after this long I cannot hear a sequence any other way.
What that actually buys you
I have run the kind of business you are hiring me to photograph. I have done the fourteen-hour day, and plated for a hundred and fifty while the band ran late and a fridge quietly gave up.
So not much on a shoot day is new. I know where to stand so I am not in your service, which fifteen minutes people will actually remember, and what to do when the schedule slips — which it will. You should not have to manage me on top of everything else.

I turn up early
Every time. Twenty years on the other side of the booking taught me exactly how much a late supplier costs everybody else.
I do what I said I would do
On the day I said I would do it. Scope is written down before we start, so neither of us is guessing what was included.
If something goes wrong, you hear it from me first
Before you notice it, and with the fix already in hand. Bad news travels badly when it travels slowly.
“Motivation comes and goes. Discipline is what really matters.” — fifteen unbroken years in a gym will teach you that, and it turns out it applies to edit suites too.

And the odd bit
There is a working FM synthesiser on the music page. There is a mid-nineties operating system in the footer, and if you boot it and open the terminal, you can play DOOM.
None of it came from being precious about method. I wanted those things to exist, so I used whatever would get me there and kept going until they worked the way I had pictured them. Keeping up with what is available is part of the job now; this industry moves quickly, and standing still is a decision like any other.
It is the same stubbornness that got through five hundred weddings. It just looks odder pointed at a synthesiser.
Where the line is
I will always use the best tools available, whatever they happen to be this year. The industry moves quickly, and refusing to move with it is a strange kind of pride.
But The Nathiverse is a human business and it is staying one. The seeing, the listening, knowing which moment matters and when to put the camera down — none of that can be handed off, and I would not want it to be.
The meat and potatoes is made by people. Me behind the camera. Me in the edit. Me playing the music. Modern tools help me build the things that sit around the work; they do not make the work. Human-centric storytelling is the whole point, and it is the one thing here that will never change.
